The Rudolf Steiner House in London will host an extraordinary exhibition of watercolours by the Italian artist Maurizio Marco Rossi.
Over a number of years the artist, who is also a musician, has developed a method based on the colour theory of Goethe and the subsequent colour criteria established by Rudolf Steiner. In this, the inherent dynamic nature of colours and their continuous evolution and transformation on the surface of the paper play a central role.
The first stage is applying veils of abstract colour; it is only at a later stage that the subject matter, structure and texture gradually emerge from the colour. Therefore it is the painting itself, resulting from the juxtaposition of the colours, which dictates and gives rise to the inspiration and artistry of the piece. In this way, the painting is conceived as a genuine living organism, the result of a gradual metamorphosis. The viewer, observing the layers of colour, will become aware of the process and consequently sense the resonances of light and shade.
Marco Maurizio Rossi was born in Milan in 1948. His formative studies were in graphics, illustration, photography and music. Between 1968 and 1978 he worked for noted editorial and discographic houses and pubblicity agencies in Milan. With his introduction to Anthroposophy in 1975, he researched into the development of new forms of figurative art. Since 1985 he has lived in Umbria and dedicated himself to painting - continuing the method formulated by Giuseppe Assenza. In 1994 he completed the first in a series of illustrations of the Grimm’s fairy tales, published the following year. At present he holds painting courses in various cities throughout Italy and his works have been exhibited in Milan, Como, Rome, Amelia, Bologna, Dornach, Basel, Giove and Saronno since 1990.
